A representative for Johnny Depp has confirmed that he will not be returning to Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Rumours circulated on Monday (27 June) that Depp was set to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow after Australian news outlet PopTopic reported an alleged deal in which the actor would return to the franchise for around $300 million (£245 million).

A spokesperson for the actor told NBC News (via E! News) that “this is made up.”

The possibility of Depp returning to the franchise was raised during testimony in a defamation trial between the actor and his ex-wife, Amber Heard. The trial was completed earlier this month (June 2022).

Depp was asked: “If Disney came to you with $300m dollars and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a Pirates of the Caribbean film?”

Depp answered; “That is true.”

Depp has played Captain Jack Sparrow in five films, the most recent being Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017. Two more Pirates movies are in the works, and many of the star’s fans would like to see him return. An online petition requesting that he reprise his role has received 800,000 signatures.
