Lil Nas X described his “painful” relationship with BET after receiving no nominations for the 2022 BET Awards, which were held on Sunday in Los Angeles.

Talking to Rolling Stone in a statement, he said “ My relationship with BET has been painful and strained for quite some time. It didn’t start with this year’s nominations like most people might think.”

“They did let me perform on their show last year, but only after [I gave] assurances that I was not a satanist or devil worshiper, and that my performance would be appropriate for their audience,” he continued.

According to insider, when Lil Nas X released the pop-rap anthem “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” in 2021, he sparked outrage among conservative pundits and politicians. The theatrical music video depicts him as a fallen queer angel riding a stripper pole down to hell and performing a lap dance for the devil.

Lil Nas X performed a Michael Jackson-inspired rendition of the hit single at the 2021 BET Awards, surrounded by topless male dancers. He finished the show by kissing one of them.

The kiss displeased showrunners, who felt “ taken advantage of, “ according to Lil Nas X and his team.

The Black Entertainment Television network established the BET Awards in 2001 to honor African Americans in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment over the previous year. The awards, which are given out on an annual basis, are broadcast live on BET. The annual presentation ceremony includes performances by artists, and some of the more popular awards are presented on television.
