Australian vocalist Judith Durham, who was also the lead singer for The Seekers, passed away at the age of 79.

The voice of the folk music group The Seekers, with whom Durham performed from 1963 until 1968 before leaving to focus on her solo career, is what made Durham most well-known.

I’ll Never Find Another You, The Carnival is Over, A World of Our Own, and Georgy Girl are a few of the band’s international hits that helped it quickly become a global success and sell more than 50 million records.

On social media, Australia’s federal minister for the arts, Tony Burke, responded to the news by praising Durham as “an icon of our music.”

“Once, the best known Australian voice was Judith Durham’s. What a contribution. What a loss.”

In recognition of her contributions to music, particularly as an entertainer and composer, Durham was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1995. She also won the Centenary Medal in 2003.

Additionally, she received the 2015 Victorian of the Year award.

Durham, a Melbourne native, released her debut EP at the age of 19, and after joining The Seekers with Athol Guy, Keith Potger, and Bruce Woodley, she quickly gained international recognition.

They split up formally in 1968, a year after sharing the Australian of the Year award, but they later came back together to perform.

After a brief stay in the UK and Switzerland, Durham wed the British pianist and musical director Ron Edgeworth in 1969. Durham suffered injuries including a fractured wrist and leg in the 1990 car crash that the couple and their tour manager survived.

The overwhelming support from fans inspired Durham to reunite with the other Seekers members for a Silver Jubilee Show, at which point Edgeworth was diagnosed as having motor neurone disease. 4 years later, he passed away.

Durham had a stroke in 2013, which had an effect on her writing and reading but not her singing. In 2018, to commemorate her 75th birthday, her most recent album, a previously unreleased collection of songs titled So Much More, was released.
